Montefili Anfiteatro 2017 from Vecchie Terre di Montefili in Tuscany is a thrilling, single‑vineyard sangiovese that shows just how serious this grape can be at altitude. Made from 100% sangiovese off the estate’s historic amphitheatre vineyard planted in 1975, it is structured, complex and deeply expressive of galestro soils and high‑altitude terroir. Aromas weave ripe red cherry and plum with wild juniper, thyme, pepper, tobacco and a distinct mineral line.

On the palate, Anfiteatro 2017 is full of tension and finesse: concentrated red fruits, savoury herbs and spice ride on fine, powdery tannins and vibrant acidity, giving a long, layered and very ageworthy finish. Extended maturation in medium to large oak (well over two years) adds polish and depth without heaviness, and recent critical attention has highlighted its purity, length and “dazzling” overall character, with top scores up to the high‑90s from major critics.
