Arneis
Arneis is a bit of a rare find in Australia but definitely one worth seeking out if you’re after something fresh, aromatic, and a little different from your usual white wines. Originally from Italy’s Piedmont region, where it earned the nickname “the little rascal” because it’s tricky to grow, Arneis has found a comfortable home in cooler Aussie spots like the King Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Adelaide Hills, and even Tasmania. These regions suit it well because the grape struggles to hold acidity in warmer climates but thrives when it can ripen slowly.
In the glass, Arneis is medium to full-bodied with a lovely dry finish. It’s bursting with exotic fruit and floral aromas, think honeysuckle, pear, apple, apricot, and a touch of almond, sometimes with subtle hints of hops or citrus depending on where it’s grown. The texture is often rich and textured, with a chalky or slightly nutty mouthfeel that gives it some weight without losing freshness. It’s a wine that’s best enjoyed young and fresh to capture its vibrant aromatics, though some producers make versions that can age gracefully for a few years.
Food pairing with Arneis is a breeze because of its balance of texture and acidity. It’s fantastic with seafood, prawns, flathead, or shellfish, light pasta dishes, and pork, especially when the sauces aren’t too heavy. It’s also a great match for creamy dishes where you want a white that can stand up without overpowering.
If you’re curious to try something that’s aromatic, elegant, and a little off the beaten track, look for Arneis from the King Valley, Adelaide Hills, or Tasmania. It’s a charming white that’s gaining momentum in Australia, offering a fresh alternative to Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc with plenty of personality and food-friendly appeal.
