Chianti Classico is the heart and soul of Tuscany’s famous Chianti region, known for producing some of Italy’s most iconic and expressive wines. Made predominantly from at least 80% Sangiovese grapes, it offers a deep ruby red colour that can develop garnet hues with age. The aromas are classic and inviting, floral notes like violets mingle with bright red fruits such as cherry and raspberry, alongside fine spicy and balsamic hints in the more refined reserves.
On the palate, Chianti Classico strikes a beautiful balance: it’s dry, harmonious, and intense with a lively acidity and a good level of tannins that give it structure and ageing potential. The flavour profile often features red fruit, dried herbs, and a touch of earthiness, with some selections showing complex layers of spice, tobacco, and leather as they mature. The wine’s character is shaped by the sunny Tuscan climate and the unique soils of the region, which allow the Sangiovese grapes to ripen slowly and fully, creating wines that are both elegant and powerful.
Chianti Classico isn’t just a wine; it’s a symbol of tradition and quality, marked by the legendary black rooster seal on its label. This seal represents the oldest and most genuine part of the Chianti zone, stretching between Florence and Siena, and guarantees strict production rules and authenticity. For those looking for something special, the Riserva and Gran Selezione categories offer even greater depth and complexity, with longer ageing and more rigorous standards.
