Primitivo is a punchy, full-flavoured red that ticks all the boxes for Aussies who like their wine big, bold and incredibly drinkable. Originally from southern Italy, specifically Puglia, it’s the same grape as Zinfandel, but with its feet firmly planted in the Mediterranean. In Australia, it’s found a bit of a cult following, especially with those looking for something rich, generous and a little bit rustic.
Straight up, you’re getting ripe dark fruits, plum, blackberry, cherry-layered with hints of licorice, cocoa, warm spice, and sometimes a little tobacco or dried fig depending on the ripeness. It’s not shy on alcohol either, usually landing somewhere in the 14–15% zone, which gives it that warming, plush mouthfeel that really suits our palate here. Tannins are soft and rounded, and there's just enough acidity to keep it from feeling too heavy.
It’s a cracking wine for pizza, pasta with red sauce, grilled sausages or anything smoky off the barbie. The combo of fruit weight and spice makes it super food-friendly, but also an easy one to open on its own when you want something comforting and full of flavour.
If you’re into big Shiraz or bold blends and want to try something southern Italian with a bit of Aussie spirit, Primitivo’s well worth tracking down. It’s unpretentious, satisfying, and made for good food, good company, and long afternoons.
