Muscadet is a light, crisp white wine made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape, mostly grown in France's Loire Valley but also popping up occasionally in Australia, especially Mornington Peninsula. It’s an easy-drinking wine with bright acidity and flavours of green apple, pear, peach, and often a mineral or saline note that gives it fresh, mouthwatering lift. One of its signature winemaking styles is “sur lie,” where the wine ages on the lees for a few months, adding a subtle creaminess and extra texture without losing its refreshing character.
Muscadet is pale, almost translucent in colour, and usually low in alcohol, making it perfect for warm Aussie days. It’s a fantastic match for seafood, especially oysters, prawns, lobster, and crab, or with light, fresh vegetarian dishes and grilled veggies. Because it’s dry and with lively acidity, it cuts through richer flavours without overpowering the dish.
