Touriga
Touriga, especially Touriga Nacional, is Portugal’s pride and joy, but it’s also carving out a solid reputation here in Australia for producing bold, structured reds with serious character. Originally from the Douro and Dão regions in Portugal, this thick-skinned grape is known for its deep colour, high tannins, and concentrated flavours of black fruits like blackberry, blackcurrant, and plum. Alongside those rich dark fruits, you’ll often find floral notes, violets and roses and hints of herbs and liquorice that add complexity and a bit of Old World charm.
In Australia, Touriga is thriving in warmer, dry regions like the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and parts of South Australia, where the climate suits its need for heat and sun to fully ripen. The wines tend to be full-bodied and intense, with firm tannins that give them great ageing potential but also a plush, velvety texture when handled well. You’ll often find Touriga used in blends, especially with Shiraz or Cabernet, to add structure and depth, but single-varietal examples are becoming more popular for those wanting something a bit different and full of personality.
What’s really exciting about Touriga is its resilience and versatility. It’s a grape that can handle tough conditions and still produce wines with vibrant fruit and impressive concentration. When aged in oak, it develops layers of spice, vanilla, and sometimes even toasted marshmallow, adding richness without losing its core fruit character.
If you’re after a red that’s bold but balanced, with a mix of ripe dark fruit, floral perfume, and a touch of savoury complexity, Touriga is worth seeking out. It’s a great choice for those who love rich, textured reds but want something a little less mainstream than Shiraz or Cabernet. Plus, it pairs beautifully with hearty Aussie fare, think slow-roasted lamb, grilled meats, or even spicy dishes—making it a versatile and exciting addition to your wine rack.
