Indigo Vineyard
Indigo Vineyards, located just ten minutes from Beechworth in Victoria’s High Country, stands as one of the region’s largest and most admired vineyards, with a rich history dating back to 1999. The site’s transformation from a sheep station known as ‘The Big Valley’ into flourishing vine rows is a testament to vision and resilience, particularly under the leadership of chairman Rob Hawkings and foundational figures like Guy Rayner, who arrived from McLaren Vale to oversee the initial plantings. Despite setbacks such as the devastating 2009 bushfires - which destroyed an entire crop - Indigo Vineyards persevered, thriving through the commitment of its small but passionate team.
Spanning 46 hectares between Beechworth and Wangaratta, Indigo Vineyards is planted to over a dozen grape varieties, with an impressive roster that includes Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Tempranillo and more. The estate’s soil diversity - from granitic sands to clay loams - and an undulating aspect contribute to the production of wines with distinctive character and elegance, reflecting the microclimates unique to the Beechworth region. Indigo is particularly acclaimed for its ‘Secret Village Chardonnay,’ which has gained regional recognition in the Halliday Companion’s North East Victorian Wine Challenge.
Visitors to Indigo Vineyards enjoy not only quality wines but also a warm, rustic cellar door experience, complemented by local produce and panoramic farmyard views. With a reputation for producing “affordable luxury” and vibrant wines that speak of place and tradition, Indigo Vineyards continues to shape the story of Beechworth as one of Australia’s premier wine-producing areas.
