Gamay Noir
Gamay Noir is a light-bodied red that’s carving out a solid spot among Aussie drinkers who want something fresh, juicy and easygoing without sacrificing flavour. It’s often compared to Pinot Noir for its bright acidity and vibrant red fruit characters, but Gamay tends to come with a bit more upfront generosity, think crushed strawberries, raspberries, black cherries, and fragrant floral notes like violets and lilac.
Despite the grape itself having quite a bit of tannin, the wines usually show soft tannins thanks to a gentle fermentation method that keeps things light and fresh. This makes Gamay highly drinkable young, bursting with lively fruit and that signature pear-drop or bubblegum lift that adds charm. Some cooler-climate Australian examples from regions like the Adelaide Hills, Mornington Peninsula, and the Yarra Valley can have a bit more structure and depth, even showing subtle spice, black pepper, or earthy notes if given a little bottle age.
Food-wise, Gamay is dead set versatile. It’s a perfect partner for lighter meats like chicken, turkey or veal, and particularly shines alongside grilled salmon or roast pork. Its low tannin and bright acidity make it a great match for salty or fatty dishes like charcuterie, or braised beef dishes where the fruit and spice can cut through richness. It also responds well to a short chill, making it ideal for warmer days or casual alfresco dining.
