Shiraz Viognier
Shiraz Viognier is one of those classic Aussie blends that brings together the best of both worlds, rich, bold Shiraz with a touch of aromatic elegance from Viognier. This style takes inspiration from the Rhône Valley in France, where a small percentage of Viognier is co-fermented with Syrah to add perfume, silkiness, and lift to the wine. In Australia, producers in regions like the Hunter Valley, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, and Victoria’s Murray Darling and Mildura areas have embraced this blend with great success.
Typically, Shiraz makes up around 95% of the blend, delivering those signature dark berry, blackcurrant, and plum flavours, along with spicy notes of pepper, cinnamon, and sometimes a hint of mocha or dark chocolate. The Viognier, usually around 5%, doesn’t add overt fruit flavours but instead contributes a floral lift, think jasmine and white flowers—and a plush, velvety texture that softens the tannins and adds complexity. The result is a wine that’s rich and full-bodied but also elegant and approachable, with a glossy sheen and a smooth, lingering finish.
Many Aussie Shiraz Viognier wines see some time in French oak barrels, which adds subtle vanilla, cedar, and spice notes, enhancing the wine’s depth without overpowering the fruit. The co-fermentation process helps integrate the two varieties seamlessly, giving the wine extra length and a balanced, harmonious palate.
Food-wise, Shiraz Viognier is incredibly versatile. It pairs beautifully with dishes that have a bit of richness and spice, think Chinese spare ribs, barbecued fish, roast beef, or even spicy Asian stir-fries. It’s a wine that works well for both casual gatherings and more formal meals, offering something a little different from your standard Shiraz but with all the Aussie boldness and flavour you’d expect.
If you’re after a red that’s plush, aromatic, and smooth but still packs a punch, look for Shiraz Viognier from regions like the Hunter Valley, McLaren Vale, or Victoria’s Murray Darling. It’s a blend that celebrates the best of Australian winemaking with a nod to French tradition, and it’s well worth adding to your collection.
