Pinot Meunier
Pinot Meunier is a fascinating grape that’s gaining more attention in Australia, especially among those who appreciate lighter, fruit-driven reds. It’s actually a close relative of Pinot Noir, sharing many of the same aromas and flavours, think bright red cherry, cranberry, and a touch of five-spice, with a slightly lighter colour and higher acidity. The name “Meunier” means “miller” in French, a nod to the fine, flour-like hairs on the underside of its leaves.
Australian Pinot Meunier often comes from cooler regions like the Yarra Valley, Adelaide Hills, Tumbarumba, and Great Western, where it thrives in the climate and soils. These wines tend to be fresh and vibrant, with juicy red fruits, subtle floral notes like violets or rose petals, and sometimes a hint of earthiness or spice. The palate is usually smooth and silky, with soft tannins and balanced acidity, making it very approachable and food-friendly.
While Pinot Meunier is best known as one of the key grapes in Champagne blends, Australian producers have been crafting excellent still versions that stand on their own, often showing a delicate smokiness alongside their bright fruit character. It pairs beautifully with richer fish like tuna and salmon, pork, duck, and even spiced Middle Eastern dishes, thanks to its lively acidity and flavour complexity.
