Savagnin
Savagnin is one of those fascinating white varieties that’s quietly carving out a niche in Australia, even if it started here by accident. Originally planted in the late 20th century under the mistaken belief it was Spanish Albariño, it wasn’t until 2009 that we discovered the truth, what we’d been growing was actually Savagnin, the grape behind France’s legendary vin jaune from the Jura. Rather than ripping out the vines, plenty of Aussie producers decided to stick with it, and now there are more than 80 making Savagnin wines, especially in South Australia and Victoria.
You’ll find Savagnin thriving in regions like McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Riverland, and Yarra Valley, with a few standout examples from King Valley, Beechworth, and the Alpine Valleys in Victoria. The grape is pretty versatile and hardy, handling the Aussie heat surprisingly well while still holding onto its crisp acidity. In the Yarra Valley, for example, it’s found a real sweet spot, producing fresh, energetic styles with a fine-boned, alpine feel.
Aussie Savagnin is generally made as a dry white, think light to medium body, bright citrus, green apple, and white peach, sometimes with a subtle nuttiness or mineral edge. It’s not aromatic like Gewürztraminer (which is actually a clone of Savagnin), but instead leans into purity and texture, making it a brilliant match for seafood, appetisers, or lighter fare. Some winemakers are even experimenting with oxidative or Jura-inspired styles, but most local bottles are all about freshness and food-friendliness.
