Golding Wines
Golding Wines is a family-owned Adelaide Hills winery and destination estate known for cool-climate wines, a character-filled cellar door and the Ginkgo restaurant, all set among rolling vines and beautifully curated gardens near Lobethal. Founded by the Golding family in the mid-1990s and launched as a wine brand in 2002, it has grown into a much-loved hub for tastings, long lunches, and weddings in the Lenswood appellation.
Golding Wines Story and Family Heritage
The Golding family first put down roots in the Adelaide Hills as horticulturalists and market gardeners before turning to viticulture in 1995, planting what would become their Western Branch Road Vineyard. This evolution from growing produce to crafting wine underpins the estate’s strong connection to the land and its seasons.
In 2002, Darren and Lucy Golding released the first wines under the Golding label, transforming the family property into a dedicated wine estate while still preserving its farming heritage. Over time, they expanded their vineyard holdings and gradually developed the rustic sandstone barn into a welcoming cellar door and restaurant that now anchors the property.
Adelaide Hills Region and Lenswood Terroir
Golding Wines sits high in the Adelaide Hills within the Lenswood appellation, a sub-region renowned for cool-climate varieties and picturesque, undulating landscapes. The combination of free-draining soils, mild summer days, crisp nights and reliable rainfall gives fruit with bright acidity, finesse and aromatic lift.
The property now includes more than 80 acres of vines planted mainly to Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Savagnin, reflecting the strengths of the region. This cool-climate setting allows Golding to craft wines with purity and tension, from vibrant whites and sparkling styles to elegant, medium-bodied reds.
Golding Winemaking Team and Philosophy
Viticulturist Darren Golding oversees the vineyards, ensuring that fruit quality remains at the heart of the operation, while winemaker Natasha Mooney leads the cellar, shaping the house style. Their approach focuses on careful site selection, hand-picked parcels and expressing the character of the Lenswood terroir through minimal intervention and thoughtful blending.
The majority of the range is produced from hand-selected fruit grown on the estate, which helps maintain consistency and a clear regional identity in each bottling. Over the years, Golding has also supplied grapes to major Australian wine brands, a reflection of the vineyard’s reputation for premium cool-climate fruit.
Signature Wine Range and Accolades
Golding Wines specialises in cool-climate varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Gamay and Shiraz, supported by smaller plantings of varieties like Savagnin. The portfolio typically spans fresh, aromatic whites, textural blends, refined sparkling wines and spice-driven reds that showcase Adelaide Hills brightness.
The winery has earned strong critical recognition, including a positive review and star rating in the Halliday Wine Companion, which notes the growth of the estate and its quality focus. Its wines are also featured on regional tourism and wine platforms that highlight Golding as a benchmark producer in the Adelaide Hills, reinforcing its standing among South Australian wineries.
Cellar Door Experience and Ginkgo Restaurant
The Golding Wines cellar door operates from a restored sandstone barn surrounded by manicured gardens and vineyards, creating a relaxed yet polished setting for tastings. Visitors can explore structured seated tastings or more casual experiences while enjoying views across the Western Branch Road property.
On-site, the Ginkgo restaurant offers seasonal, wine-friendly menus that showcase local produce, with bookings considered essential due to its popularity. The estate is also a sought-after venue for weddings and events, combining ceremony spaces, garden backdrops and reception areas that make the most of the hills landscape.
