Pinot Blanc
Pinot Blanc is one of those white wines that quietly impresses without needing to shout. For Australians on the hunt for something a bit different in the white wine aisle, it’s a refreshing change from the usual suspects. This grape is actually a cousin of Pinot Noir, and while it doesn’t have the fame of Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc, it’s got plenty of charm for those willing to give it a go.
Pour a glass and you’ll notice a pale straw colour, often with aromas of fresh apples and pears, sometimes a hint of peach or even a touch of almond. There’s a gentle floral lift and a squeeze of lemon zest, but nothing too sharp or overwhelming. On the palate, Pinot Blanc is soft and rounded, with enough acidity to keep things lively but never too tart. Some versions even show a subtle minerality, which adds a bit of sophistication without being fussy.
Pinot Blanc’s roots are in France, especially Burgundy and Alsace, but you’ll also find top examples from Germany, Austria, and northern Italy (where it goes by Pinot Bianco). In Alsace, it’s often used for sparkling Crémant d’Alsace, but it shines just as well on its own.
If you’re used to the zippy edge of Sauvignon Blanc or the richer, sometimes oaky style of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc sits comfortably in between. It’s rounder and less acidic than Sauvignon, and lighter and less buttery than most Chardonnays. That makes it a great option for anyone after an easy-drinking white that still has personality.
Food-wise, Pinot Blanc is a team player. It loves seafood, chicken, lighter pasta dishes, and creamy salads. It’s also a winner with soft cheeses and flaky white fish, making it a solid choice for picnics, long lunches, or any meal where you want the wine to complement rather than dominate.
