Brash Higgins MRLO Merlot Amphora 2021 is a distinctive natural wine from the Lennon Vineyard in McLaren Vale, sourced from vines planted in 1994 on black cracking clay soils (Ngaltinga Formation). This is the fifth Merlot release, benefiting from the balanced 2021 vintage. The wine was wild fermented in a combination of amphora and one-ton open fermenters, then aged in clay pots for 7 months followed by 6 months in barrel. The blend includes a 15% addition of Nero d’Avola for acidity, tannin, and exotic spice complexity. It shows deep purple color with vibrant, sweet fruit aromas including grapes, oyster shell, earthy clay, black jelly bean, black tea, Jerusalem artichoke, and orange peel. The palate is smooth and seductive with dark cherries, spiced plum, and glossy acidity leading to a refreshing grip and a finish of dried violets and firm tannins. Rated 93 points by Ned Goodwin (James Suckling), it offers a unique twist on Australian Merlot, combining liveliness, structure, and savory complexity.
