Grenache Syrah Mourvèdre
Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre—often called the GSM blend—are the holy trinity of Aussie red blends, especially in warm regions like Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and parts of South Australia. Each grape brings something unique to the party, creating wines that are rich, complex, and incredibly versatile.
Grenache is the fruit-forward, juicy heart of the blend. It’s a thin-skinned grape that thrives in hot, dry conditions, delivering bright red fruit flavours like strawberry, raspberry, and maraschino cherry, along with a subtle herbal lift. It’s often compared to Pinot Noir for its elegance and lighter body, giving the blend freshness and a juicy, approachable character.
Syrah (or Shiraz, as we call it here) adds the muscle and structure. It brings deep, dark fruit flavours—black plum, blackberry, and blackcurrant—plus that classic peppery spice and smoky notes we love. Syrah-dominant blends tend to be fuller-bodied with firmer tannins, adding depth and a savoury edge.
Mourvèdre rounds things out with richness, tannic grip, and earthy complexity. It’s darker-skinned and thicker than Grenache, contributing dark berry, leather, gamey and sometimes even meaty notes. Mourvèdre gives the blend structure and longevity, helping it age gracefully.
In Australia, GSM blends are crafted to balance these elements beautifully—think luscious red and dark berries, fragrant violets, spice, and soft but structured tannins. They’re perfect with hearty Aussie fare like lamb, beef stews, barbecued meats, and rich roasted vegetables.
