Matt Holmes’ 2019 Riesling is just the third Bannockburn release to include material from a younger plot of Riesling (planted 2015). The lion’s share of the fruit remains drawn from Bannockburn’s ungrafted 1976 plantings. It was fermented in a combination of tank and oak cask. As with the last couple of vintages, there were no additions other than a touch of sulphur. Enticing aromas of orange blossom, ginger and green apple present before a fleshy and textured palate with elements of orchard fruit and citrus, balanced by saline minerality and a core of freshening acidity.

“Mainly from vines planted in ’76, plus a modest planting in ’15. Hand-picked, wholebunch pressed, settled overnight, then racked to tank for cold fermentation (for freshness plus drive), part to old puncheons (for texture and complexity). It’s far better than the other small scattered patches from the region, and will build with age. Made for fun, but achieved more than that. 12.5% alc.” 93 Points, James Halliday’s Wine Companion Magazine

“Bannockburn’s riesling is usually worth a look. It’s grown mostly on vines planted in 1976, with half going into stainless steel and the other half into old oak. Plenty of texture as you’d expect, effectively into lush territory, though bursts of stone fruit and citrus keep the momentum going, the zip. There’s a smoky minerality to this wine, almost a sea-spray element. It works.” 91 Points, Campbell Mattinson, The Winefront
