Turkey Flat Vineyards

67 Bethany Rd,Tanunda South Australia 5352

Turkey Flat stands as one of the Barossa Valley’s most historic and characterful wine estates, with roots stretching back to 1847. Originally established by Johann Frederick August Fiedler, a Silesian settler, the property’s first Shiraz vines - planted along Tanunda Creek - are among the oldest in the world still in commercial production. The site earned its name from the Australian bustards that once roamed the flats, and by 1865 came under the stewardship of the Schulz family, who would guide it through generations of transformation from a mixed farmstead to a distinguished estate winery.

Fourth-generation custodian Christie Schulz revitalised the family’s vineyards in the late 1980s, launching Turkey Flat Vineyards officially in 1990. Guided by a philosophy rooted in respect for tradition and the environment, Turkey Flat has become renowned for its Rhône-inspired varietals - particularly Shiraz, Grenache, and Mataro - and its benchmark Rosé. The estate’s old vines, deep soils, and sustainable viticulture all contribute to wines that combine Barossa power with textural elegance and authenticity.

Turkey Flat’s wines have consistently earned acclaim both in Australia and abroad. Its 2016 Grenache famously received the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy at the Melbourne Royal Wine Show in 2017, one of the most prestigious accolades in the Australian wine industry. The winery’s Shiraz and Grenache are regular winners on the show circuit, while its iconic Rosé has become a staple of the contemporary Australian table, praised for leading the nation’s “rosé revolution” with finesse and freshness.

Today, Turkey Flat continues to embody the heritage and vitality of Barossa winemaking - an enduring symbol of craftsmanship, sustainability, and the timeless appeal of Australia’s oldest Shiraz vines.
