Alta Langa DOCG of the Piemonte region was the first sparkling wine to be made in Italy, back in the 19th century. The intention was to craft sparkling wines similar to champagne, so Pinot Noir and Chardonnay were planted. While the wine never received the notoriety of its French cousin, Piemonte winemakers are very proud of it.
