Moorilla Estate & Domaine A
Moorilla Estate stands as one of Tasmania’s foundational vineyards, unique both for its pioneering history and its integration with the avant-garde Museum of Old and New Art (MONA). Established in 1958 by Italian-Australian textile merchant Claudio Alcorso, Moorilla was among the very first commercial vineyards in Tasmania, defying advice to grow apples by importing Riesling vines from South Australia and planting them along the wind-strewn banks of the Derwent River. Alcorso led the estate for more than three decades, later expanding to the St Matthias vineyard near Launceston.
In 1995, Moorilla’s fortunes were revitalized by David Walsh, an eccentric gambler and art collector, who transformed the property by building MONA - a world-renowned art museum - directly into the landscape. This merger of wine and art vaulted Moorilla into the national spotlight and made it one of Tasmania’s must-visit destinations, combining luxury accommodation, fine dining, and a world-class cellar door.
Moorilla’s winemaking philosophy centers on small-batch, estate-grown fruit and cool-climate viticulture. It produces three premium wine collections: Praxis (youthful and bold), Muse (old-world elegance with a Tasmanian twist), and Cloth Label (luxurious and age-worthy). The estate is famed for its textural whites—particularly Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris - alongside highly regarded Pinot Noir and sparkling wine, leveraging Tasmania’s cool climate for vibrant acidity and finesse.
Recognition for Moorilla’s quality is reflected in numerous accolades, including over 20 Gold Ribbons, 70+ Silver Ribbons, and more than 50 Top Ranks in respected competitions. Notably, the Moorilla Estate 2009 Cloth Late Disgorged received praise at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2023, showcasing the label’s international standing. Today, Moorilla remains synonymous with innovation, excellence, and Tasmanian wine heritage.
