Garganega
Garganega is a white grape variety that doesn’t get nearly as much attention as it deserves, especially here in Australia where plantings are still small but promising. Originally from Italy’s Veneto region, home of the famous Soave wine. Garganega delivers wines that are medium to full-bodied, with bright aromas of wild flowers, lemon curd, nuts, honeydew melon and pear. It’s dry with a clean finish and medium acidity, making for a fresh but textured wine that’s surprisingly versatile.
In Australia, you'll mostly find Garganega in places like Barossa Valley and parts of Victoria, where it ripens late but keeps good acidity, making it a great option for those who want a white that’s not overly sharp or flabby. It can be unoaked or lightly oaked, depending on the style, and some examples gain lovely complexity and even the ability to age gracefully for up to a decade or more.
When it comes to food, Garganega is a dream match for a range of dishes, think Asian cuisine, curries, light antipasti, poultry, seafood like crab or oysters, and even pasta with cream sauces. Its almond notes and vibrant fruit flavours really lift these meals. If you want to try a white that’s fresh, a bit different, and versatile enough for everything from Sunday lunch to special dinners, Garganega is a rewarding grape to explore on your next wine hunt.
