A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon 20% Merlot and 10% Shiraz from Murdoch Hill’s Oakbank vineyard at 420 metres ASL in the Adelaide Hills. The grapes are sourced from a predominately east-facing slope, which avoids the harsh afternoon sun and produces cool, savoury wines with more finesse.
The soil structure here is predominately sandy loam over medium clay, with varying levels of ironstone, quartz and schist rock. Whole bunches were hand-harvested, then de-stemmed into open fermenters before extended maceration on skins for two to four weeks, allowing Michael Downer to build in layers and sculpt a soft tannin profile. The wine was matured in fine French barriques (20% new) for 10 months before bottling. Now also starting to show some lovely secondary leathery characters, the note below captures it well.
“Nice drink this, crisp and bright, herbal and blue fruited, light and frisky. The greenery is a strong lead in the wine, perfume and palate, the major thing in front of blueberry, mulberry and briny acidity. It feels like a luncheon wine, has a good sheath of tannins, finishes decent and reasonably long with a little pulverised rock grippiness to tannin. Good times, if not just a little bit sophisticated.” 92 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
