Australia’s Top 10 Wineries: The Real Review Rankings
The Real Review has unveiled its definitive ranking of Australia’s finest wineries, a list that recognises consistent excellence, innovation, and the producers shaping this country’s wine landscape. From the Yarra Valley’s elegant cool-climate expressions to Rutherglen’s fortified masterpieces, these ten wineries represent the pinnacle of Australian winemaking. Each has earned its position through dedication to quality, distinctive regional expression, and wines that command international respect.
1. Yarra Yering, Yarra Valley, Victoria
Yarra Yering claims the number one position, a recognition of the winery’s unwavering commitment to terroir-driven winemaking. Established in 1969 by Dr Bailey Carrodus, this iconic estate produced the first commercial vintage in the Yarra Valley since 1922, effectively relaunching the region’s wine industry. The winery’s 28 hectares of unirrigated vines produce wines of extraordinary depth and intensity, maintaining the legacy established over five decades ago.
Winemaker Sarah Crowe, named Winemaker of the Year in the 2017 Halliday Wine Companion, has continued the tradition of excellence whilst bringing fresh perspective to the estate. The numbered Dry Red wines remain the winery’s signature: Dry Red No. 1 is a premium Cabernet blend, Dry Red No. 2 showcases Shiraz, and Dry Red No. 3 presents a unique blend of Portuguese varieties. All fruit is hand-picked and fermented in traditional “tea chest” open fermenters designed by Dr Carrodus, enabling quality small-batch winemaking and the ultra-fine tannin structure for which Yarra Yering is renowned. Browse our curated selection of Yarra Yering wines to experience these iconic Dry Reds and discover why this estate continues to define excellence in Australian winemaking.
2. Levantine Hill, Yarra Valley, Victoria
Levantine Hill secures second place with wines that combine outstanding quality with architectural vision. The winery is best known for its superb, if pricey, wines produced alongside a striking, architect-designed restaurant and cellar door that has become a destination unto itself. The estate’s 2018 Chardonnay exemplifies the house style: a rich and detailed wine that provides a stage for the full Chardonnay orchestra to play, balancing complexity with elegance.
What elevates Levantine Hill to this position is the precision evident across the range. The wines display intense and complex flavour with good length, avoiding bigness or heaviness whilst maintaining remarkable freshness despite age. This balance between power and finesse, combined with meticulous attention to detail in both viticulture and winemaking, has established Levantine Hill as one of the Yarra Valley’s most consistent producers. Explore our collection of Levantine Hill wines to discover the precision and elegance that defines this exceptional Yarra Valley producer.
3. Wendouree, Clare Valley, South Australia
Wendouree represents winemaking at its most uncompromising. Founded in 1892 by the Birks brothers and purchased by Tony and Lita Brady in 1974, this historic estate has built a reputation for deep, tightly wound reds produced from some of Australia’s oldest vines. The 100-year-old stone winery remains virtually unchanged from the year it was built, a treasure beyond price.
Tony Brady’s refusal to irrigate forces vine roots deep into the hills, producing fruit of exceptional concentration. The estate employs hand-harvesting, basket pressing, and fermentation in open-top fermenters with hand plunging of the grape cap, techniques unchanged for decades. Wendouree wines are sold exclusively through a trusted mailing list, resisting modern market-driven approaches in favour of patient, traditional winemaking. The winery occasionally chooses not to release wines in difficult vintages, prioritising quality over commercial considerations.
4. Penfolds, Multiple Regions, South Australia
Penfolds takes fourth position, recognition of the scale and consistency that have made it Australia’s most iconic wine brand. Founded in 1844 by Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold, the winery sources grapes from Australia’s best regions, including Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, and Eden Valley. This multi-regional approach enables Penfolds winemakers to craft wines that express the best of South Australian viticulture.
Penfolds Kalimna Block 42 vines, planted in the 1880s, are thought to be the oldest continuously-producing Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the world. The estate’s flagship wine, Grange, remains one of Australia’s most collected wines, whilst the Bin series offers accessible expressions of regional character. What earns Penfolds this position is not merely heritage but ongoing innovation, consistently producing wines that balance tradition with contemporary winemaking whilst maintaining house style across vintages and vineyard sources.
5. Tyrrell’s Wines, Hunter Valley, New South Wales
Tyrrell’s claims fifth place as one of Australia’s most successful family wineries, operating continuously since 1858. The estate helped pioneer Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Australia whilst establishing Hunter Valley Semillon as one of the world’s iconic wine styles. Vat 1 Semillon is Australia’s most awarded white wine, having won almost 5,500 medals and more than 330 trophies.
The Tyrrell family owns eight of the eleven oldest vineyards in New South Wales, using fruit from these ancient vines to craft the Tyrrell’s Sacred Sites range. The Old Patch Shiraz has been awarded a perfect 100-point score for four releases in a row by influential US wine journalist James Suckling. Fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell, alongside long-time winemakers Andrew Spinaze and Mark Richardson, balances the estate’s 160-plus-year history with forward-thinking winemaking that keeps Tyrrell’s amongst Australia’s most dynamic producers.
6. Henschke, Eden Valley, South Australia
Henschke secures sixth position, largely on the strength of Hill of Grace, widely regarded as Australia’s greatest single-vineyard wine. The eight-hectare single-vineyard Shiraz planting is situated at the historic village of Parrot Hill, overlooked by the Lutheran church Gnadenberg (which translates from German to “Hill of Grace”) that gives the vineyard its evocative name. Some of these gnarled, ancient vines date back generations, producing wines of extraordinary power and persistence.
Beyond Hill of Grace, Henschke produces a range of wines from Eden Valley and surrounding subregions that consistently earn critical acclaim. The estate’s commitment to preserving old vines whilst maintaining meticulous viticulture has created a portfolio that balances history with contemporary relevance. Henschke wines display rich, plush concentration with amazing depth and complexity, yet maintain freshness and avoid heaviness. Discover our range of Henschke wines, from accessible Eden Valley expressions to the profound depth that has made this estate a benchmark for Australian Shiraz.
7. Wine by Farr, Geelong, Victoria
Wine by Farr occupies seventh position as Australia’s pre-eminent Pinot Noir producer, crafting wines that rival and sometimes surpass Burgundy. Established in 1994 by Robyn and Gary Farr in Bannockburn, the estate is now run by second-generation Nick and Cassie Farr. Nick was named Winemaker of the Year by Gourmet Traveller Wine in 2020, following his father who won the same award in 2001, making them the only father-son duo to receive this prestigious accolade.
The estate farms a complex environment in the Moorabool Valley, where ancient rivers have created six different soil types whilst the nearby ocean brings cool air by night. Wine by Farr is celebrated for single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines from sites such as Sangreal, Tout Près, Farrside, and Côte Vineyard. Production volumes remain deliberately low, and the wines are highly sought after, reflecting meticulous attention to detail learned through extensive work at Domaine Dujac, Cristom, and Au Bon Climat.
8. Cullen, Wilyabrup (Margaret River), Western Australia
Cullen claims eighth position as Margaret River’s only biodynamic and carbon-positive winery. First established in 1971 by Dr Kevin and Diana Cullen, the estate is certified biodynamic, carbon neutral, and naturally powered, with a philosophy summed up in three words: Quality, Integrity, and Sustainability. Chief Winemaker and Managing Director Vanya Cullen introduced organic farming in 1998 and achieved full biodynamic certification in 2004.
Vanya’s dedication to sustainable viticulture earned her the Order of Australia in 2023 and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Margaret River Wine Association in 2025. The estate’s flagship wines, Diana Madeline Cabernet Sauvignon and Kevin John Chardonnay, are among the very best of their styles in Australia and beyond. All Cullen wines are now labelled as Wilyabrup to promote the subregion as a distinct winegrowing area of Margaret River.
9. Chambers Rosewood, Rutherglen, Victoria
Chambers Rosewood secures ninth position as one of the world’s greatest producers of complex fortified wines. The Chambers family have been making fortified wines in Rutherglen for more than six generations, with the base solera for their Grand Rutherglen Muscat created by third-generation William Henry Chambers in the 1930s and meticulously maintained for over 90 years. The Grand Rutherglen Muscat was named The Real Review Fortified Wine of the Year in 2025, scoring 98/100 for its luscious, super-concentrated character of extraordinary power and persistence.
Chambers produces Muscats across four classifications that mark a progression in richness, complexity, and intensity, from Rutherglen Muscat (average age 3-5 years) to Rare Muscat featuring original bases from the early 1890s and 1900s. The estate’s commitment to traditional winemaking techniques, combined with exceptional old-vine fruit, produces fortified wines that display raisiny muscat fruit among mature characters of dried fig, honey, and molasses.
10. Thistledown, McLaren Vale, South Australia
Thistledown rounds out the top ten as specialists in Grenache, narrating the stories of South Australia’s iconic vineyard sites through hand-crafted, detailed wines. Proprietor and winemaker Giles Cooke MW and director Patrick Gilhooly were crowned McLaren Vale Bushing Monarchs in 2025 after their Sands of Time 2024 Single Vineyard Blewitt Springs Grenache won Best Wine at the McLaren Vale Wine Show. Their 2024 This Charming Man Grenache went even further, winning Grenache of the Year, Red Wine of the Year, and ultimately Wine of the Year.
Thistledown sources fruit from some of McLaren Vale’s finest old Grenache vineyards, where sandy, mineral-strewn soils and old bush-trained vines produce wines of remarkable deliciousness. The wines have been described as having “an assemblage of talent, superb old-vine sites and remarkable wines that have established a firmament at the top of the grenache totem in this country”. What earns Thistledown this position is the consistent ability to capture bright aromatics, long flavours, and balanced tannin whilst maintaining purity and precision across the range.
