Smallfry Wines
The Smallfry Story – From Vines to Vision
Smallfry Wines is the life’s work of partners in both life and business, viticulturists‑turned‑winemakers Suzi Hilder and Wayne Ahrens. Both were born into the wine industry and trained in the technical side of grape growing before the “winemaking bug” pushed them to start bottling their own fruit under the Smallfry label. Their journey began not with a flashy winery but with vineyards they tended themselves, slowly building a range that reflected their love of food, texture and balance in wine.
The name “Smallfry” hints at their philosophy: stay small, stay hands‑on, and let the vineyards lead the way rather than chasing trends or industrial scale. Instead of crafting blockbuster Barossa styles, they lean into a more European sensibility, focusing on freshness, savoury detail and moderate alcohols, making wines that sit comfortably at the table rather than dominate it. Over time, their personality‑driven wines – from cloudy orange blends to playful pét‑nats – have become cult favourites among natural‑wine lovers in Australia and abroad.
Vine Vale and Eden Valley – Two Special Barossa Sites
Smallfry is anchored by two distinct Barossa vineyards: one in the cooler high country of Eden Valley and one in the sandy soils of Vine Vale on the valley floor. Their first vineyard, in Eden Valley, was established and planted by Suzi and Wayne in 1994; the 50‑hectare property has around 9.5 hectares under vine, with riesling, shiraz and cabernet propagated from local cultivars and planted on their own roots. This elevated site brings tension and line to their wines, with naturally higher acidity and perfume, especially for whites like riesling.
Down on the Barossa floor, their Vine Vale vineyard is an old family block with a remarkable lineage, featuring vines over 100 years old sitting alongside newer plantings selected for a warming climate. Historically the Schlieb family’s home block, the previous grower clocked up some 52 vintages here before passing the baton on, giving Suzi and Wayne the responsibility for an important piece of Barossa heritage. Today, the 18 hectares at Vine Vale are a mosaic of varieties – grenache, shiraz, semillon, riesling, mataro, tempranillo, trousseau, marsanne, roussanne, cabernet sauvignon, cinsault, pedro ximénez and bonvedro, among others – giving them a huge palette to blend from.
The vineyards have been certified organic and biodynamic since 2011, and Smallfry practice regenerative agriculture to encourage a thriving ecosystem of plants, animals and micro‑life. Sheep, cover crops and diverse under‑vine growth are part of the picture, with the goal of building soil health and resilience rather than chasing yield. That attention to the ground is one reason their fruit is sought after by other cutting‑edge producers such as Frederick Stevenson, Les Fruits, Ad Lib and Rasa, who regularly source grapes from the Smallfry site.
Winemaking Philosophy – Natural, Food‑Friendly, Euro in Spirit
Suzi and Wayne came to winemaking as food lovers first, and that shows in the way they build their wines for the table. Their approach hinges on natural ferments, minimal to zero adjustments, and a gentle touch with old oak so the vineyard – rather than the winery – does the talking. They favour a “Euro style”, looking for balance and subtlety rather than sheer power, and are happy to embrace texture, skin contact and a little cloudiness if that’s what the fruit wants to express.
In the cellar, indigenous yeasts kick off fermentation, and additions are kept to a minimum, with only small doses of sulphur where needed for stability. Old barrels and neutral vessels are preferred, giving oxygen and complexity without overwhelming oak flavour. This low‑intervention mindset extends to their experimental cuvées – orange wines, pétillant naturel, and unusual blends all sit alongside more classic Barossa reds, showing the breadth of expression possible from their sites.
An example of that philosophy is their long‑running “Tangerine Dream” orange wine, which blends semillon, pedro ximénez, riesling and roussanne from the Vine Vale vineyard. Grapes are harvested in multiple passes through vintage – earlier picks for acid and freshness, later picks for richness and ginger‑tinged flavour – then fermented on skins to build grip and tannin. The result is a deeply coloured, cloudy, full‑bodied white with grainy tannin that they describe as “orange wine mid strength”, something that bridges the gap between a creamy chardonnay and more hard‑core skin‑contact styles.
Signature Wines and Standout Styles
Across its range, Smallfry offers everything from bright pét‑nats to serious old‑vine reds, but all share an emphasis on drinkability and character.
-
Tangerine Dream (Barossa): A benchmark orange wine made from Barossa Valley semillon, pedro ximénez, riesling and roussanne, showing brilliant yellow‑orange colour, hay and ginger aromatics, and a full, dry palate with persistent flavour. It is often described as a “red drinker’s white” thanks to its grainy tannin and layered structure.
-
Pétillant Naturel Rosé: A bottle‑fermented, all‑biodynamic rosé with pretty, floral aromas, cranberry, Aperol and watermelon granita notes, and a zingy, ultra‑refreshing palate; they admit that when bottle fermentation behaves, “my goodness it is fun.” The wine has dusty pink colour with lavender hues, a juicy, fresh palate and a zesty finish.
-
Gewürzbomb: A skin‑contact white highlighting lychee, lime and rose‑petal aromatics, balancing floral, funky elements with freshness and elegance. It underscores their interest in aromatic whites with texture rather than simple, cold‑fermented fruitiness.
-
Old‑vine reds and blends: From grenache, shiraz and mataro to less common grapes like trousseau and cinsault, Smallfry’s red wines tend to show succulent fruit, spice, and savoury complexity rather than heavy oak. Their wines have built strong global user ratings, averaging around 4.0 out of 5 across hundreds of thousands of Vivino reviews, reflecting consistent quality.
Smallfry also experiments with non‑vintage blends when nature demands it; after a devastating frost in spring 2024, for example, they combined 2024 and 2025 components for the NV Barossa Tangerine Dream to maintain style and complexity despite low yields. This willingness to adapt shows a pragmatic streak beneath the natural‑wine aesthetic, with consistency and pleasure in the glass as the end goal.
Smallfry Recognition, Community and Cellar‑Door Experience
Although Smallfry remains modest in scale, it has become well known in organic, biodynamic and natural‑wine circles globally. The estate is a listed grower and producer on Raw Wine, the influential international fair and directory of organic and biodynamic makers, underlining its commitment to low‑intervention practices and transparent farming. Their fruit’s use by respected South Australian artisan labels – including Frederick Stevenson, Les Fruits, Ad Lib and Rasa – also serves as a quiet endorsement of vineyard quality.
On consumer platforms, Smallfry’s wines attract strong followings, with over 440,000 total ratings across the winery’s listings and an average score of about 4.0, suggesting that drinkers respond positively to the style. Articles and blog reviews describe their wines as “big‑time delight”, highlighting the way Suzi and Wayne have leveraged their viticultural knowledge into expressive, fun bottlings that still feel serious at the table.
Smallfry’s home is in the Barossa Valley, and their cellar‑door and contact details centre on the Barossa region, with the business operating out of Vine Vale and nearby Angaston. Visitors can expect a relaxed, personal experience rather than a polished corporate setup, often with the chance to taste through experimental releases and small‑batch bottlings not widely distributed. Their active social‑media presence, particularly on Instagram, offers a window into life among the vines, seasonal work and the occasional behind‑the‑scenes look at fermentations bubbling away in the shed.
If you enjoy characterful, organically farmed Barossa wines – especially skin‑contact whites, pét‑nats and old‑vine reds that dare to be different – Smallfry is a producer well worth seeking out on your next trip through the valley or via specialist retailers and natural‑wine merchants.
