Mitchell’s McNicol Shiraz 2010 from the Clare Valley is a sophisticated aged expression carefully selected from a handful of the region’s best mature, dry-grown, low-yielding vineyards, held back for a decade before release to showcase exceptional development. Dark purple to maroon with brick-red edges, the bouquet bursts with blackberries, dark cherry and plum alongside dry herbs, cold tea, chocolate, cloves, leather and hints of eucalyptus. The palate reveals loads of brown spice, dried fruits, fig and date with dark chocolate, skerricks of blueberry and blackcurrant, balanced by very fine tannins that provide grip alongside impressive length.

This classic Clare Valley Shiraz pairs brilliantly with slow-cooked lamb shanks where its mature flavours complement rich, tender meat, while beef Wellington allows the wine’s complexity to shine. Aged hard cheeses and mushroom truffle risotto also make ideal matches with the wine’s savory secondary characters.

Scored 95 points by Mike Bennie at Halliday Wine Companion, the McNicol Shiraz 2010 is now in prime maturity yet has life to go for keen cellaring enthusiasts. There’s a sense of luxury to this wine with beautifully balanced mouthfeel, soft tannin and rich crimson berries lingering in the upper registers.
