Fontodi Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2020 from the Conca d’Oro of Panzano is a profoundly structured, single‑vineyard Sangiovese that’s dark, intense and built for the long haul, sitting right at the top of the Chianti tree. Vigna del Sorbo 2020 is organically grown Sangiovese from a southwest‑facing seven‑hectare site on galestro and alberese at about 420 metres, fermented in stainless steel then aged around 18 months in French barriques (about 30% new) and a further six months in large oak before bottling.

The nose is deep and brooding, with black fruit, plum, cassis, sundried tomato, grilled herbs, lavender, dried sage, violet, cured meats, woodsmoke and crushed limestone all woven through the aromatics. On the palate, Fontodi Vigna del Sorbo 2020 is full‑bodied, powerful and tightly coiled, packing huge intensity into what critics describe as a deceptively mid‑weight frame, with savoury black plum and cherry, graphite, tobacco and earthy tones framed by taut, youthful tannins and bright acidity that promise a very long life. It’s one of the most backward, age‑worthy Sorbos in recent memory – a wine for those prepared to wait.

Fontodi Vigna del Sorbo 2020 demands hearty dishes: bistecca alla fiorentina, braised beef, lamb shoulder, game or truffled mushroom ragù, plus aged pecorino or other hard cheeses, where its structure, savouriness and sheer depth can really stretch out. Most reviewers suggest cellaring until at least 2026–2027, with a drinking window well into the 2040s; if opened now, a very long decant is essential to coax out its layers.
