Brut
Brut is a term that tells you how dry a sparkling wine is—it means the wine has very little residual sugar, usually less than 12 grams per litre. It’s the most popular style for sparkling wines worldwide, including Prosecco, Champagne, and Australian fizz. The word “brut” is French and literally means “raw” or “pure,” but in wine terms, it simply means dry and crisp on the palate.
Brut sparkling wines are fresh, lively, and often show bright citrus and green apple flavours, sometimes with subtle toasty or biscuity notes from ageing on lees. They’re versatile and food-friendly, pairing well with seafood, chicken, salty snacks, and lighter dishes. Within the brut category, there are even drier styles like Brut Nature (almost zero sugar) and Extra Brut (very low sugar), but standard Brut strikes a perfect balance of dryness and flavour.
So, Brut isn’t a grape or a type of sparkling wine on its own—it’s a dryness level that sits under the sparkling wine umbrella, whether that’s Champagne, Prosecco, or Aussie bubbles. If you want a crisp, refreshing fizz that’s not sweet, look for Brut on the label.
