Fortified Wine

Fortified wine holds a special place in Australia’s wine story, with a tradition stretching back over two centuries. These wines are made by adding a neutral grape spirit, usually brandy, during or after fermentation, which boosts the alcohol and often leaves a touch of sweetness behind. This technique was originally developed to help wines survive long sea voyages, but it quickly became a beloved style in its own right, especially suited to Australia’s warm climate.

Australia is known for several types of fortified wines. Tawny Port-style wines are some of the most famous, often made from Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro, or Portuguese varieties like Touriga. These wines are rich and luscious, with flavours of raisins, dried figs, nuts, chocolate, and warm spices, and they’re perfect for sipping by the fire or pairing with rich desserts and cheeses. Vintage Port-style fortifieds, which come from a single year and are meant for ageing, also have a strong following here.

Rutherglen in Victoria is the heartland of Australia’s fortified Muscat and Topaque (formerly Tokay). These wines are intensely sweet and complex, with layers of raisiny fruit, toffee, caramel, and nuts, often aged for decades in oak barrels. Muscat is rich and viscous, while Topaque, made from the Muscadelle grape, is a bit lighter but equally luscious and unique to Australia.

Then there’s Apera, the Aussie take on dry Sherry-style fortified wines. Due to naming rules, Australian “Sherry” was rebranded as Apera in 2011, but it continues the tradition of oxidative ageing with nutty, savory flavours and a dry finish. These are great as aperitifs or with tapas-style food.

Fortified wines are incredibly versatile, whether you want something sweet and decadent to finish a meal, a dry and savoury sipper before dinner, or a rich, warming glass to enjoy on a cool night. Australia’s fortified wines combine old-world styles with local innovation, making them a treasure trove for anyone wanting to explore a different side of Aussie wine. Keep an eye out for fortifieds from Rutherglen, Barossa, McLaren Vale, and the Riverland, they’re where you’ll find some of the best examples.
