Blank Canvas Upton Downs Pinot Noir 2023 is a striking Awatere Valley Pinot from Matt Thomson and Sophie Parker-Thomson MW, drawn from the cool, clay-rich Upton Downs Vineyard in Marlborough. Partial whole-bunch fermentation brings aromatic lift and savoury structure, while the wine’s finesse, intensity and age-worthy shape make it a seriously compelling New Zealand Pinot.
Spiced strawberry, raspberry, red apple skin and pomegranate unfold with red rose, star anise, nutmeg, blood orange and dusty clay-earth notes. The palate is lacy yet powerful, showing plush red fruit within an elegant frame of bright acidity, silky tannins and gentle savoury spice. Blank Canvas Upton Downs Pinot Noir finishes long, fragrant and beautifully poised.
Decant the 2023 Blank Canvas Upton Downs Pinot Noir briefly and pair it with duck breast, roast quail, mushroom risotto, pork fillet or cedar-plank salmon. Its red-fruit purity flatters delicate game and poultry, while the savoury spice and fine tannin grip make it excellent with earthy mushroom dishes.
