Blank Canvas Settlement Pinot Noir 2021 from Marlborough’s Omaka Valley is a powerful yet finely etched single‑vineyard Pinot, showing just how serious this site can be in a cooler, low‑yielding year. Blank Canvas Settlement Pinot Noir 2021 delivers black cherry, boysenberry and dark plum with forest berries, violet, thyme, clove, vanilla and a graphite, gravelly mineral edge, framed by savoury whole‑bunch notes and subtle smoke. The palate is medium‑plus bodied, concentrated and tense, with firm, chalky tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, linear, savoury finish that screams cellar‑worthy rather than simple, fruity Pinot.

Food‑wise, think serious dishes – duck breast, lamb with herbs, venison, slow‑roast pork shoulder or mushroom and truffle pasta, where the wine’s structure and depth really come into their own. It’s also superb with roasted beetroot, chargrilled veg and hard cheeses, and absolutely deserves proper Pinot stems and a good decant to let those aromatics unfold. This is one to open for a special dinner or tuck away for a few more years if you like your Pinot with more savoury complexity.

Critic love is strong – Cameron Douglas MS is at 96 points, calling it powerful, precise and cellar‑worthy, while The Real Review sits at 93 points, praising its elegant black fruit, florals, herbs and finely structured tannins. With hand‑picked fruit, around 30–50% whole bunch and about a year in quality French oak, it’s a benchmark Omaka Valley Pinot that will comfortably develop through the early‑to‑mid 2030s.
