Vermentino is a fantastic white grape that’s really starting to make waves in Australia, especially for those who want something fresh, crisp, and a bit different from the usual Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc. Originally from the Mediterranean, particularly northern Italy, Vermentino thrives in warm, coastal climates, which makes it a perfect fit for Aussie regions like the King Valley, Margaret River, Riverland, Murray Darling, and even parts of South Australia.
In the glass, Vermentino is light to medium-bodied with bright, zesty acidity that keeps it refreshing and lively. You’ll pick up vibrant flavours of lime, green apple, peach, and citrus peel, often with a lovely bitter almond or pine nut finish that adds a bit of texture and complexity. There’s also a distinctive saline or sea spray character that gives it a subtle briny edge, making it feel like a perfect match for seafood or anything with a touch of coastal freshness.
Australian winemakers are experimenting with different styles, from crisp, stainless steel-fermented versions that highlight the grape’s natural brightness, to those that see some lees ageing or gentle oak to add a bit more weight and texture. But generally, Vermentino is best enjoyed young and fresh, capturing that lively acidity and vibrant fruit.
Food-wise, Vermentino is a dream partner for simple, fresh dishes, think grilled white fish, oysters, prawn dumplings, or light Asian-inspired meals. Its citrus and herbal notes complement herbs like basil and parsley, and the wine’s natural saltiness makes it especially good with seafood.
If you’re after a white that’s bright, aromatic, and a little bit different, Vermentino from regions like King Valley or Margaret River is definitely worth a look. It’s a wine that captures the essence of summer and coastal living, perfect for sipping on a sunny afternoon or pairing with fresh, vibrant food.
