Southwood Wines is an exciting new boutique vineyard located in Kellevie, southeast Tasmania, just 45 minutes out of Hobart. Founded by a group of pinot-loving friends, Southwood embodies their passion for Tasmania and Pinot Noir. The vineyard itself is modest at just 0.5ha, planted in 2020 with four clones of Pinot Noir, reflecting a commitment to quality over quantity.

Southwood’s wines exemplify Tasmania’s cool-climate strengths. While waiting for their own vines to mature, the partners sourced premium fruit from renowned Derwent and Coal River valleys for their early releases, including the White Kangaroo and Glenora Pinot Noirs. These wines have already drawn critical acclaim, praised for their “brightness”, varietal character, and complexity. Their highly-anticipated estate release, the Ragged Tier Pinot Noir, showcases the unique terroir of Southwood’s own vineyard.

The region itself - Southeast Tasmania - is renowned for its long, cool growing season, which imparts intensity and purity to Pinot Noir. The folded valleys and maritime climate allow grapes a slow, even ripening, preserving vibrant fruit flavours and balancing natural acidity.

Southwood’s wine range is currently focused on single-vineyard Pinot Noir expressions - delicate, complex and purely fruited - with future expansion possible as the vines mature. In just a few years, the Southwood team has created a number of very distinctive new offerings for lovers of cool-climate Pinot Noir.
