Bethany Wines Of Barossa
Bethany Wines is a historic Barossa Valley winery at Tanunda’s foothills, long associated with the Schrapel family and now entering a new chapter as an elevated destination venue in the region.
Bethany Wines Barossa Valley Heritage
Bethany Wines traces its story back to 1844, when Johann Gottlob Schrapel and his family migrated from Silesia and settled in Bethany, the Barossa’s first village. In 1852 he planted the first family vineyard on the estate from cuttings brought from Europe, built a cellar and gained a reputation as a local winemaker. For the next four generations the Schrapels focused on grape growing, supplying fruit from some of the region’s oldest vines rather than bottling under their own label. This deep agricultural background underpins Bethany’s identity as one of the Barossa’s most historically significant vineyard sites, with over 160 years of continuous family connection to the land.
Founding of Bethany Wines and the Schrapel Family Legacy
The modern winery was founded in 1981 by fifth-generation brothers Geoff and Robert Schrapel, who chose to make wine rather than uproot old Shiraz and Grenache during a difficult period for growers. They built the winery into an old bluestone quarry above the village, the same quarry that earlier settlers had used to source stone for Bethany’s historic buildings. Their first vintage crushed just two tonnes of Shiraz and Riesling, quietly launching what would become one of the Barossa’s most recognisable family wine brands. Over four decades, Geoff and Robert developed a portfolio centred on classic Barossa varieties and a cellar door renowned for warm, down-to-earth hospitality and panoramic views across the valley.
New Ownership, Winemaking Team and Future Direction
In the mid‑2020s Bethany Wines was sold to a private South Australian syndicate, while the vineyards continued to be managed by Geoff and Robert, preserving continuity in the estate’s viticulture. The current winemaker is Alex MacClelland, who brings a contemporary lens to the long-established house style, working closely with the Schrapel family vineyards to maintain quality and regional character. A recent “new chapter” announcement outlined the new owners’ vision to elevate Bethany Wines into a premier destination venue within the globally recognised Barossa region, while honouring the site’s historic roots. This shift aims to blend heritage, hospitality and wine tourism, building on Bethany’s reputation as a cornerstone of South Australia’s wine story.
Bethany Wines Range and Signature Barossa Varieties
Bethany has built its name on richly flavoured yet balanced Barossa Shiraz and old-vine Grenache, supported by a broader range featuring Cabernet, Chardonnay, Riesling and other regional staples. Much of the fruit is sourced from the estate’s own vineyards, complemented by select parcels from neighbouring growers in both the Barossa and Eden Valleys. This mix of sites allows the winery to craft approachable, early-drinking wines alongside more structured, cellar-worthy reds under ranges such as Blue Quarry and other flagship labels. Across the portfolio, there is a clear emphasis on expressing the depth of old Barossa vines while keeping the style vibrant and food friendly.
Bethany Wines Cellar Door Experience and Visitor Information
The cellar door at 378 Bethany Road, Tanunda, is set into the historic quarry site, offering sweeping views over the valley and a relaxed, quintessentially Barossan tasting setting. It is typically open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday from 1pm to 5pm, giving visitors ample time to include it in a Barossa itinerary. Tastings showcase core Barossa varieties and estate specialties, allowing guests to follow the story from old-vine vineyard blocks through to the finished wines in the glass. Just over an hour’s drive north‑east of Adelaide, Bethany Wines has become known as a place where long family tradition meets the region’s evolving wine tourism scene, making it a popular stop for both first‑time and repeat visitors.
