Grenache Shiraz Mataro
If you’re after a red blend that’s bursting with flavour, texture, and Aussie character, you can’t go past Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro (also known as Mourvèdre). This trio, famously called GSM, is one of Australia’s favourite blends and a true reflection of our warm climate and bold winemaking style.
Grenache is the juicy, fruit-driven heart of the blend. It delivers bright red berry flavours like raspberry, strawberry, and cherry, along with a silky texture and fresh acidity that keeps the wine lively. It’s usually the dominant grape in the blend, offering softness and approachability without heavy tannins.
Shiraz (or Syrah) provides the backbone and spice. It brings deeper, darker fruit flavours such as blackberry and plum, along with peppery, smoky notes and firm tannins that give the wine structure and ageing potential. Shiraz adds richness and intensity, balancing Grenache’s brightness perfectly.
Mataro rounds out the blend with earthy, savoury complexity. It contributes firm tannins, gamey and leathery notes, and a touch of Mediterranean herbs, adding depth and elegance that lifts the whole wine. Mataro’s presence ensures the blend has grip and longevity.
Australian GSMs vary in style depending on the region and winemaker, from lighter, Grenache-led wines that are fresh and easy-drinking, to more structured, Shiraz-dominant versions built for ageing. The best blends find a perfect harmony between fruit, spice, and savoury elements, making them incredibly food-friendly and versatile.
