Empire of Dirt Lyra Chardonnay 2023 from the Bellarine Peninsula in Geelong is a sleek, modern Australian Chardonnay that melds coastal freshness with proper barrel work, giving a fine line of citrus and stone fruit over savoury, complex edges. This Empire of Dirt ‘Lyra’ Chardonnay 2023 is fermented with indigenous yeast in 100% French oak, around a quarter of it new, with roughly 25% malolactic, keeping the style tight, creamy and beautifully balanced.
In the glass, expect aromas of white nectarine, lemon curd, grapefruit zest and green apple, layered with struck‑match flint, cashew, vanilla pod and a gentle leesy nougat note. The palate is medium‑bodied and finely weighted, with vibrant acidity running through ripe stone fruits and citrus, a creamy, barrel‑derived texture and a long, savoury, gently toasty finish that feels more coastal and chiselled than heavy or buttery.
Empire of Dirt Lyra Chardonnay 2023 is spot on with pan‑fried snapper, grilled calamari, roast chicken or pork with crackling, where that interplay of acid, creaminess and oak spice really flatters the plate. It’s also an excellent partner for mushroom dishes, lobster rolls, creamy seafood pasta or soft‑rind cheeses, the wine’s freshness keeping each mouthful lifted while the French oak brings just enough richness to feel indulgent.
