Viognier
Viognier is a standout white grape that’s making waves in Australia, especially in warmer regions like the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and parts of South Australia. It’s known for its highly aromatic, floral character with ripe stone fruit flavours—think apricot, peach, and sometimes tropical notes like mango. Compared to Chardonnay, Viognier usually has lower acidity but a fuller, silkier mouthfeel, often with subtle hints of spice, citrus, or even a touch of oak depending on the style.
Australian Viognier wines range from fresh and delicate to rich and full-bodied, with many showing a lovely balance between lush fruit and refreshing acidity. It’s a versatile wine that pairs beautifully with seafood, roast chicken, spicy dishes, and even richer meats. While most are made to be enjoyed young and vibrant, some premium examples can age gracefully for a few years.
If you’re after a white that’s aromatic, textural, and a bit different from the usual suspects, Viognier is well worth exploring. It’s often called the “red wine drinker’s white” because of its weight and complexity, making it a perfect bridge for those who want something more than just crisp and light.
