Alicante Bouchet

Alicante Bouschet is a remarkable red grape variety, created in the mid-19th century by French viticulturist Henri Bouschet through a cross between Grenache and Petit Bouschet. Unlike most red grapes, it is a teinturier-meaning both its skin and pulp are deeply pigmented-resulting in wines of extraordinary color intensity. While originally developed in France’s Languedoc, Alicante Bouschet has found notable success in Portugal’s Alentejo, as well as in Spain, southern France, and parts of the United States and Australia. Its resilience and adaptability make it especially well-suited to hot, arid climates, where it produces structured, robust wines.
