Decoding the Label – What DOCG, DOC, and IGT Actually Mean for Your Wallet
Italian wine labels can feel like a secret code. Between the region names, the grape varieties, and the unpronounceable estates,
Continue readingBarolo is one of Italy’s most iconic and prestigious red wines, produced exclusively from the Nebbiolo grape in the Langhe hills of Piedmont, northwest Italy. The production zone includes the villages of Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d’Alba, and Monforte d’Alba, as well as parts of several other communes. The region’s rolling hills, calcareous marl and sandstone soils, and continental climate with notable temperature swings create ideal conditions for Nebbiolo, resulting in wines of remarkable structure, complexity, and longevity. The western villages (Barolo, La Morra) tend to produce more elegant, aromatic wines, while the eastern villages (Monforte d’Alba, Serralunga d’Alba) yield more structured and long-lived Barolos.
