Krinklewood Estate
Krinklewood Estate is a standout example of organic and biodynamic winemaking in Australia's historic Hunter Valley. The estate’s remarkable journey, dedication to sustainability, and consistently awarded wines make it a true flagship for conscious viticulture in New South Wales.
The History of Krinklewood Estate
Krinklewood was founded in 1981 by Rod Windrim and his family, who brought both a passion for building and a deep interest in sustainable French-inspired winemaking to the Hunter Valley. The transformation of the estate into a certified organic and biodynamic vineyard began in 2002—a progressive move at a time when few in the region considered such practices viable. With patience, care, and a willingness to innovate, the Windrim family built Krinklewood into a thriving property renowned for its environmental stewardship and the quality of its fruit. In 2020, Oscar Martin, an entrepreneur devoted to the preservation and evolution of the land, took over custodianship of Krinklewood, promising to maintain its sustainable philosophy and shape the next chapter for the estate.
A Unique Region: Broke Fordwich, Hunter Valley
The Krinklewood vineyard is set in the picturesque Broke Fordwich valley, a sub-region of the Lower Hunter Valley in New South Wales. The estate spans 150 acres, bordered by the scenic Brokenback Range and the Wollombi Brook. This region is celebrated for its alluvial soils, ideal climate, and its ability to produce wines with a distinct sense of place. Krinklewood’s landscape enhances its French village-like atmosphere, with Provencal gardens, sandstone features, and roaming peacocks, all of which reinforce the estate's connection to both European tradition and the Australian bush.
Commitment to Biodynamics and Sustainability
Krinklewood’s transition to certified organic and biodynamic farming was completed in 2007, marking it as a pioneer in the Hunter Valley. The entire property is audited annually to maintain these strict certifications. Farming with respect for biodynamic rhythms, Krinklewood eschews synthetic chemicals, instead nurturing its soil with natural preparations guided by lunar cycles. This eco-friendly philosophy extends beyond the vines; Krinklewood integrates sustainability into every aspect of its daily operations, from energy use to event hospitality, and even the masterplan for future property development.
Estate Accolades and Recognition
Krinklewood Estate’s dedication to minimal intervention and vineyard health has brought growing industry acclaim. They have regularly been finalists for “Cellar Door of the Year” in the Hunter Valley Legends Awards and their wines frequently receive awards at regional and national competitions. Of special note is their 2024 Estate Semillon, which took home Top Gold at the Hunter Valley Boutique Winemaker Show, Gold at the NSW Wine Awards (95 points), and was lauded by The Real Review for its purity and bright, zesty character.
