Fraser Gallop Estate
Fraser Gallop Estate is one of the Margaret River region’s most distinguished wineries, celebrated for its commitment to excellence, terroir-driven wines, and a string of international accolades.
Fraser Gallop Estate Winery History
Founded in 1999 by tech entrepreneur Nigel Gallop and his late wife Heather Fraser, Fraser Gallop Estate began with a vision to craft world-renowned wines inspired by Napa Valley, Bordeaux, and Burgundy. After extensive research, Gallop selected a prime property in the heart of Margaret River’s Wilyabrup Valley, 20km north of the town and just 6km from the southwest coast. The very first vines - primarily cabernet sauvignon (Houghton clone) and Gin Gin clone chardonnay - were planted that year on what would become one of the region’s most admired vineyards.
The Margaret River Wine Region
Margaret River is globally lauded for its unique combination of gravelly laterite soils, clay subsoils, and maritime climate moderated by the Indian Ocean’s breezes. Fraser Gallop Estate benefits from its elevated position and undulating topography, which produce wines of exceptional finesse and vibrancy. The vineyard’s close-planted vines are dry-grown, meaning no irrigation - a challenging approach, but one that yields berries of intense flavor and heightened minerality. The region’s climate, with high winter rainfall and long, dry summers, helps impart distinctive aromas, color, and texture to the wines.
Winemaking Philosophy at Fraser Gallop
Every aspect of Fraser Gallop Estate’s winemaking places quality above all else. The estate’s fruit is entirely hand-picked, with vines managed on vertical trellises and cane pruning to maximize sun exposure. Former head winemaker, Clive Otto, designed the purpose-built winery in 2008 and carved out a minimally interventionist approach. Otto handed the reigns to Ellin Tritt who had been working with Otto since 2017 since returning from stints around the globe where she produced vintages in Napa Valley, Canada, Alsace and Provence. The fermentation of cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, and Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends occurs within the state-of-the-art facility, harnessing naturally occurring yeasts for complexity. Tritt's philosophy is to allow the fruit and terroir to speak through the wine, favoring traditional techniques alongside modern precision.
Quality and Signature Wines
The estate is synonymous with refined cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay—its two flagship varieties—alongside Bordeaux-style blends that capture the essence of Margaret River. The Parterre Cabernet Sauvignon is consistently ranked among the region’s best, with the 2021 vintage achieving ratings of 94.6 points from top Australian critics. Wines boast ripe black fruit profiles in cabernets, vibrant acidity, layered minerality, and balanced oak integration, offering notable aging potential. The estate’s Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Parterre Chardonnay demonstrate remarkable finesse and aromatic complexity, with each release reflecting careful cellaring and meticulous vineyard management.
Awards and Accolades
Fraser Gallop Estate’s international reputation was catapulted in 2009, when its 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon won the trophy for Best Bordeaux Blend over £10 at the renowned Decanter World Wine Awards - one of the industry’s highest honors, with only a handful of gold medals granted among over 10,000 competitors. The estate has since claimed numerous accolades, including gold medals at the International Wine & Spirit Competition and titles such as Halliday Wine Companion Best of the Best (2020). Esteemed critics such as James Halliday, Ray Jordan, and Peter Forrestal have consistently placed Fraser Gallop Estate among Margaret River’s pioneers of quality and innovation, with particular praise for their chardonnays and cabernets.
