Grenache Blanc
Grenache Blanc is one of those rare finds in Australia that’s starting to catch the attention of local wine lovers, and for good reason. While we’re well known for our Grenache reds, the white version is still a bit of a unicorn here, but it’s got a lot to offer if you’re keen to try something outside the usual Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc.
Pour yourself a glass and you’ll get a burst of bright, tangy citrus layered with juicy pear, green apple, and sometimes a hint of white peach or even unripe mango. There’s often a lovely floral lift, think honeysuckle or lemon balm, and a subtle herbal edge that keeps things interesting. The palate is where Grenache Blanc really shines: it’s plump and textured, with a richness that’s balanced by crisp acidity, and there’s sometimes a salty mineral note that makes it super food-friendly.
Most Aussie Grenache Blanc comes from pioneering plantings in places like the Riverland, and you’ll find winemakers experimenting with wild ferments, concrete eggs, and old French barrels to coax out even more complexity and texture. It’s a wine that breaks the mould—taut and lively, but never sharp or thin.
If you’re into food pairing, Grenache Blanc is a bit of an all-rounder. It’s brilliant with seafood, roast chicken, Asian dishes, or even a Mediterranean spread. That juicy fruit and fresh acidity can handle everything from creamy cheeses to zesty salads, making it a great pick for long lunches or sharing plates.
